We wandered in to Makkasan railway station and booked 2nd class tickets for our group of 4 for the train trip from Bangkok to Khon Kaen the following morning.
It cost 1500 for 4 people in second class, the trip being approximately 8 hours. Starting time: 08.20 hours.
Next morning, we hopped in a cab at 7 am, confident the promised 45 minute trip would get us to Hualamphong railway station with time to spare for breakfast.
It wasn't to be. The morning traffic got slower and slower and the manually operated traffic intersection at SiamSquare actually kept us waiting for a full 15 minutes. For one set of lights!
At 8.15 we paid off the cab at Hualamphong, dived out into the seething mass of folks pouring in and out of this busy station and rushed off to the platform, desperate not to miss our train.
We were duly waiting at platform 3 waiting for the north eastern line train by 8.19 am. What an achievement even if we had missed out on the planned breakfast.
Except the train was 20 minutes late. Ah well.
