Phra That Luang

If you visit Vientiane you will see this place sooner or later, whether you take a tour or are travelling on your own. Phra That Luang is the city's most impressive sight in a city with a very short list of "must see" sights.

Surrounded by masses of open space, the massive golden spire of Phra That Luang stands out as a truly Lao example of buddhist achitecture and is quite a sight, gleaming brighly in the sun. The sparse surrounds emphasise its size, as you can actually view the whole structure from afar without the usualy juble of buildings you find in other Asian cities.

There is a strip of vendors about 500 metres away from Phra That Luang, selling hats (you will need one), soft drinks and other trinkets.

Phra That Luang is a short drive from the center of town and easily reached by Jumbo (Tuk Tuk). If you walk here you can get a ride back into town as a few Jumbos hang around the entrance.
