Our hotel conceirge quoted RM300 for a car for the return trip to the Genting Highlands Resort, which is about 1 hours out of KL. We thought better of that and bought a RM70 taxi coupon outside for a one way trip. (the return journey later cost RM60)
Although central KL is a slow snarl of unmoving traffic, it doesn't take long to escape this and it is a smooth drive along the highway past the massive entrance to the Batu Caves and up into the mountains. The views are breathtaking, passing cloud swathed mountains and before long we are driving in heavy mist, taking the slow winding road up into the mountains.
At the base of Genting Highlands we are greeted by several machine gun toting soldiers who check the ID of the cab driver before we go up an even more winding road. Visibility is close to zero and our driver fancies himself a bit of a racing car driver so it a wonder no one throws up on the drive up there.
Finally we arrive at the main entrance to the Genting Resort Hotel, where visibilty is literally zero as the entire mountain is swathed in cloud, with cold, crisp air and strong winds.
It is the start of our surreal visit to Genting - we never actually see outside as the clouds never cleared, but a massive, indoor world awaits us.
